Rooted in Reading for 2nd Grade

Hey, teachers… have you heard the BIG news?! Katie King and I have developed a BRAND NEW Rooted in Reading Series for Second Grade classrooms! You may be thinking… what? why? don’t you already have a 2nd grade set of Rooted in Reading? I get it! Back in the fall of 2015, we developed our very first year of reading curriculum. The books, lesson plans, and activities are all very near and dear to our hearts. We still love all of those books and value the time we spent pouring our souls into the creation of the curriculum. Over the years we have added to, edited, and updated it many times.

However, it’s been SEVEN years since we began! Can you believe that? We are having a hard time wrapping our heads around that one. While we LOVE and BELIEVE in our current 2nd Grade Rooted in Reading, we are also so excited about the BRAND NEW set of lesson plans and activities with 40 of the most beautiful books you ever did see!

Now, let’s look at all of these beautiful books! You will find links to all of the books on Amazon in this blog post… HOWEVER, please know that there are other options when looking for and purchasing books! It’s just easiest for us to link everything in one place. Here are some other ways to go about finding the books you need:

  1. Check with your local or school library.
  2. Search garage sales and half price books.
  3. Make an Amazon wish list with all of the books you need. Share it with your family, community, and social media.
  4. Know any teachers that are stepping away from the classroom or are retiring? Check their book stash before they go!
  5. Look on Thrift Books (www.thriftbooks.com)
  6. Barnes and Noble will often have picture book discounts such as buy one get one half off. Target sometimes does this as well.
  7. Utilize Scholastic! Many of these books will be more affordable on Scholastic. You just want to make sure you place your order in advance because the shipping times can be wonky.

  1. Congratulations. I am happy to hear you so excited but I sure wish it was a first grade edition. 🙁

  2. Yay! I am so excited! I have worn out the first version of 2nd grade RIR! When will the 2nd grade phonics be available for us to check out and purchase as well?

    1. I’m so happy you are excited! We love the 1st edition, but knew some teachers were ready to spice things up! Yes, the phonics will be in the 2nd edition bundle as well as listed separately!

      1. 2nd grade phonics will be included in the 2nd edition of 2nd grade rooted in reading, it will also be posted separately on April 5th as a growing bundle.

  3. If you already have the 2nd grade rooted in reading will this be updated or is this a new bundle to purchase?

    1. We will be addressing this, but this is a completely new resource (it is not an update). So, it will be a new resource to purchase if you desire! If not, just use the 1st edition as it is formatted similarly!

  4. There’s a very high chance I’ll be moving from 5th grade to 2nd grade, and I have been looking at Rooted in Reading! Which one would you suggest to use? The first edition or second?! Rooted in Reading makes me excited to change grade levels!

    1. If you are starting brand new, I would start with the 2nd Edition! Also, you will LOVE teaching second grade!

  5. I was just starting to buy your set. I am going to stop so that I can buy the new one for next year. I was not at a school district that I was able to use it and I was buying them for next year. I am so excited to use them.

    1. I am so excited that you are excited! You can definitely use our 1st edition, but if you haven’t invested in that yet, I would definitely wait for the 2nd edition!

    1. Great question! This will be formatted like our other yearly resources, so there will not be a digital component!

  6. If we have the first edition and get the second edition, can we use those together? As in, can we do one story from one edition and jump to another story in the other? Will they somewhat line up? I love the first so much!

    1. Hi Katie! I’m so glad you love our first set! We do too! It won’t line up completely perfectly, but you can definitely pick and choose from both sets! When we release the overview you can see which ones that might work with!

  7. Will the bundle cost on TpT be similar/same as the previous Rooted in Reading for 2nd grade?

    1. Yes, all of our Rooted in Reading units and bundles are priced the same. We will give specific details on pricing in our FAQ post!

  8. Love your resources! I’m currently using your 1st grade RR, do you have any plans to release more 1st grade RR content in the future?

    1. Right now we are only focusing on the 2nd Edition of 2nd Grade. We aren’t saying it will NEVER happen, we are just saying it won’t happen right now.

  9. Hi Amy,
I love all of your units. I have the math and the Rooted in Reading for second grade. Just curious. Is there a way you could ‘early release’ the month of August? Our grade level plans in the summer. It would be nice to have the first month before school starts…. I just thought I would ask. I find this very exciting!
