Meet Amy

Hey there!  My name is Amy and I’m a wife, momma, and lover of all things teaching related.   After graduating college in December of 2006, I started teaching 4th grade… fresh out of college and had not a clue what to do!!!  I took over a class in the middle of the year and my one and only goal was to SURVIVE!  Over my 11 years in education, I spent the majority of that time teaching 1st and 2nd grades.

The Start

I started this blog in May of 2011 as a way to connect with other teachers and share my teaching ideas. Creating lessons, activities, and decorations for my own classroom brought me so much joy, so being able to share those ideas with other teachers was an absolute dream!  Now I’ve been on this little space of the internet for over a decade, and it is truly one of my favorite places to be.

One of my favorite things about being a classroom teacher is the art of developing a lesson plan.  I learned early on that giving my students worksheet after worksheet was just not going to work for us.  I believe that students are most engaged in the classroom when the activities are hands-on, the books are meaningful, and the environment is structured but fun.  The best activities are those when the students don’t even realize they are working/learning because they are just having too much fun while doing so!  I’m always looking for ways I can spice up the typical activity just by adding in simple materials such as dice, spinners, poms, pipe cleaners, etc.  Sometimes you just need that ONE little thing to take your lesson from mundane to magical.

Collaborate

Over the years I have been blessed to collaborate with other teacher authors to develop Math and Reading curriculum for classrooms all over the world.  Katie King and I began creating Rooted in Reading in 2015.  What began as reading curriculum for the 2nd grade classroom, now serves teachers in Kindergarten through 3rd grades.

I have also partnered with Hope King to bring a wide variety of classroom resources to teachers.
We developed Engagement Made Easy resources, Magic of Math for grades 1-3, and Write On for 2-3 grades.

Family

While I love sharing with teachers, I also have a life outside of the teaching world! I’ve been married to the love of my life, Jared, for over 17 years.  He supports all of my crazy dreams and is the best teammate I could ever have.

We began growing our family through adoption in 2012.  We have two children who were born in the DRC.  They keep us busy with all of their school, sports, and church activities.  Wouldn’t change it for the world!  As a family we love to travel, watch the Dallas Mavericks, and eat as much Tex Mex food as we can get our hands on.

Welcome

I know how hard you work day in and day out as a teacher. My goal is to lighten your load. I hope that when you visit here, you’ll walk away with a lesson idea, a fun activity, or a book recommendation that will positively impact your classroom. As a teacher resource creator, my purpose is to save you time and energy while also helping to bring some joy into your classroom.
