Free Spider Math Activity for K-3 | Halloween Math Center

Halloween fun can be as simple as switching out your standard math center for something a little more seasonal and a tiny bit creepy if you want to up the spookiness. And you don’t need to change your lesson plans or learning goals either. Just take what you’ve prepared and add a little twist. This free spider math activity for grades K-3 is an example of that.

It can be used for number recognition, ten frames, addition, multiplication, and comparing numbers, so there are several ways to use the same setup with different students and grade levels.

The best part is that the hands-on setup is simple. With a spider basket, a little webbing, and the printable number spiders, you can turn regular math practice into a festive Halloween math center.

Setting Up the Spider Math Center

I found the spider web basket, cotton spider webbing, and green spider at Kroger, but you definitely don’t need these exact items. Around Halloween, you can usually find similar spider baskets, fake webbing, and plastic spiders at grocery stores, dollar stores, craft stores, and other seasonal sections.

To set it up, place the cotton webbing inside the basket and tuck the numbered spider cards throughout the web. I added the bright green spider to the top just for a little extra Halloween fun.

You really only need a few things:

  • Spider basket or another Halloween container
  • Cotton spider webbing
  • Plastic or light-up spider, optional
  • Printed and cut apart number spiders

Teacher Tip: You could easily simplify the setup and use any basket or bin you already have. The webbing is what really gives it that spider-themed look!

How the Spider Math Activity Works

Once the center is set up, students reach into the web and choose numbered spiders. What they do with those numbers depends on the skill they are practicing.

For the equation activities, students choose two spiders, use the numbers to create an equation on their recording sheet, and then solve.

That means the same hands-on math center can stay in place while you simply switch out the recording sheet or number cards to match the skill your students need to practice.

Kindergarten Number Recognition and Ten Frame Practice

For younger students, Spot a Spider focuses on number recognition and number representation.

Students choose one spider, identify the number, write it on their recording sheet, and then represent that number on a ten frame.

The free resource includes spider number cards from 0-20, along with a recording sheet that gives students multiple opportunities to write and represent numbers. This would work well for a kindergarten math center or for students who need additional practice connecting numerals with quantities.

Addition Practice with Spidery Sums

For addition practice, students choose two numbered spiders from the basket. Those two numbers become the addends in their equation.

Students record the two numbers, solve the addition equation, and continue choosing new spiders until their recording sheet is complete. The Spidery Sums page provides space for 15 addition equations.

Teacher Tip: You can control the difficulty simply by choosing which spider cards you put into the basket. If students are working on smaller sums, only include the numbers that make sense for their current level.

Multiplication Fact Practice with Spidery Facts

The exact same setup can also be used for multiplication fact practice.

With Spidery Facts, students choose two spiders and use the numbers as factors. They write and solve the multiplication equation on their recording sheet before choosing another pair.

This makes the activity an easy seasonal option for older elementary students working on multiplication fact fluency.

Make It Work for Your Classroom

You don’t have to recreate my setup exactly for this activity to work. Use whatever Halloween container and decorations you can find, print the spider cards that match the skill you want students to practice, and add the corresponding recording sheet.

For an even simpler version, skip the decorations altogether and put the spider cards into a regular basket. Students still get the hands-on element of choosing their numbers and using them to complete their math practice.
