3 Engaging Easter-Themed Place Value Activities for Elementary Kids

Place value requires year-round skills practice in the classroom. So, that means it can get a little repetitive. The best way to break through the monotony is to incorporate creative, themed activities! In spring, rabbit or Easter-themed place value activities are the perfect way to keep your students engaged while reinforcing foundational number sense skills.

Whether you’re teaching first, second, or third grade, these low-prep, hands-on rabbit and Easter math activities are easy to differentiate and fun to display—perfect for your spring bulletin board or math centers.

Craft an Egg-stra Special Place Value Basket Activity

To drive the theme, it’s a great idea to incorporate symbolic elements. An Easter basket plays on the fun of the coveted egg hunt which most students can relate to, and filling them with ‘eggs’ will grab their interest.

This Place Value Basket activity combines number sense practice with a creative Easter twist!

To begin, students roll a number cube to generate a number—making it easy to differentiate for 2-digit, 3-digit, or even 4-digit numbers. Then, they get to build their Easter Egg Basket with each piece requiring a different task. Here’s a step-by-step:

  1. On the bow, students write their number in the middle along with the number that comes before and after on each side.
  2. On each egg, they represent the number in expanded form, word form, and by drawing base ten blocks.
  3. Students grab their basket, glue the bow on the front, and add their eggs “inside!”

After they’re done, place these adorable math crafts on your hallway or bulletin board display!

Build a Base Ten Bunny Bar

Base Ten Bunnies are a teacher-favorite—and for good reason. In Base Ten Bunnies, students are working with place value in a hands-on way, giving them a good visual example of how each number’s place value differs.

To craft their bunnies, students visit a “Base Ten Bunny Bar” where they select different pieces to build a bunny. Each part of the bunny—head, whiskers, bowtie—represents a place value: thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones, depending on the size of the number being used.

Once their bunny is assembled, students will:

  • Calculate the total value represented by the base ten pieces
  • Record the number in multiple forms using a graphic organizer or recording sheet
  • Decorate and personalize their bunny to bring it all together!

It’s a wonderful blend of math, creativity, and critical thinking, and it makes for a standout spring math display. You can add it alongside some other spring favorites like a fun Butterfly display or Rainbow bulletin board for spring!

Wearable Rabbit Place Value Hats

Nothing says “math can be fun” like letting students wear what they’ve learned! And they can never get too much practice with representing numbers.

To craft their hats, students start by rolling a number cube to generate a number. On their rabbit headband, they show the number in standard form, expanded form, and word form.

You could make this even more interactive and have students complete different tasks. Some examples include finding the number before and after their number or lining up from least to greatest!

There are many creative ways to enhance the lesson, and it’s a quick and effective way to reinforce place value while adding a bit of whimsy to your math block. Plus, students love showing off their learning—and their hats—to classmates, teachers, and even families at home.

And yes, even my dog Bumi got in on the fun!
