Building Numbers!

This year I have the privilege of going into several 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms.  It’s a blessing to meet and work with so many students at different schools.  Today I was in a first grade classroom for their math block.  I wanted to share what we did today on their fourth day of school!

The students will be starting place value soon, but this week they are reviewing numbers 0-20 from Kindergarten.  I brought a poster board that had two ten frames on it so that we could use while at the carpet for our minilesson.  Students sat in a circle around the ten frames with their own board to work on.

We rolled a 20 sided dice, built the number together, and students drew a  model of that number on their own ten frames.  We discussed the amount of tens and ones within the number.

To make it more interactive, I assigned the roles of dice tossing and number building to different students.  They waited so patiently until it was their turn to be a helper!  BUT, since everyone had their own board to work on, everyone had a job to do!  There was no time wasted 🙂

           

It is also fun to use cups to do the very same activity!  Just change out the manipulative so that students say engaged and interested 🙂  Plus cups are easy to stack and clean up!

After we built several numbers together and discussed how to make a group of ten over and over again, it was time for students to do a little practicing.

They used these picture spinners to land on a set of objects.  The students counted the objects with the picture, built it on their working mat, and located the number on their number grid.  Everyone wanted to land on the ice cream picture 🙂  It was a big deal when it actually happened, ha!
