Book Series my 2nd Grader Enjoys

One thing I love about 2nd grade is that moment when a student falls in love with a series of books. Once they jump into chapter books, it’s like they just can’t get enough. I would find myself constantly at Half Price books scouring the shelves to add to my collection.

Now that I have my very own 2nd grader at home, I am getting to see this happen all over again firsthand. So, I wanted to share Israel’s favorite book series with you. He is 8 years old and LOVES to read graphic novels. You’ll definitely see that reflected in his book choices. I haven’t seen a recent reading level done on him, but I would say that he is average to average/high for 2nd grade.

I saw Bunny vs Monkey books suggested by Aly at Just a Primary Girl. You can find more of her book suggestions HERE! I immediately put them on Israel’s Christmas and I’m so glad that I did. He has since used gift cards to purchase the remaining ones that he wasn’t gifted.

Alright, now let’s dig into his absolute favorites. On the image I put that these are series that boys enjoy. However, it may be that girls enjoy them too! I just only want to speak from experience. Joelle definitely loves Dog Man and I Survived, but she hasn’t gotten into the others.

I’m going to list these in order of favorites (as given to me by Israel) All of these are part of a series, so I’ll just link to at least one book in the series! You can also click HERE to see them all in one place! He also loves Captain Underpants, but I completely forgot about that when making his list!

  1. Dog Man
  2. Bunny vs Monkey
  3. Big Nate
  4. Bird & Squirrel
  5. I Survived
  6. DC Super Pets
  7. Cat Kid Comic Club (this is a new series by Dav Pilkey)
  8. A Narwhal and Jelly Book
  9. Looshkin
  10. InvestiGators
  11. Dragon
  12. Max Meow
  13. Real Pigeons

For Christmas Israel also received a Kindle Kids Edition. This has been SOOOO very helpful when it comes to keeping up with his reading needs. It comes with one year of access to Amazon Kids+ which has a library of 20,000 children’s books. He has been able to read all of the Big Nate and DC SuperPets books through that program which has saved me a ton of money so far. AND Joelle gets access to it too which is so nice. She’s had a kindle for several years now. I should mention that I paid for this, so I’m only sharing it because we love it! We do a mix of paperback and digital books now.
