Fall Into Comparing Numbers: A FREE Fall Comparing Numbers Activity for Math Centers

Comparing numbers is a skill we come back to again and again. It’s one of students’ first steps into deeper number sense, but all that repetition takes a little creativity to keep the same greater than, less than routine from going stale. This FREE fall comparing numbers activity gives students meaningful greater than and less than practice with a simple hands-on twist that adds just enough excitement to reignite their interest. And the leaf theme is perfect for this time of year!

With differentiated cards for numbers to 20, 2-digit numbers, and 3-digit numbers, you choose the set that works best for your students, then pop it into a themed tray for the simplest setup ever.

How to Set Up This Fall Comparing Numbers Activity

Step 1: Grab a Divided Tray

I found this adorable leaf-shaped divided platter at Walgreens and immediately knew it would make the perfect fall math center.

You definitely don’t need the platter to use the activity, but a divided tray makes sorting the cards easy. Place the Greater Than label in one section and the Less Than label in another. The remaining section holds the comparison cards students still need to sort.

Teacher Tip: Keep an eye out for inexpensive divided trays all year long. They’re an easy way to turn a printable activity into a hands-on math center without changing the skill students are practicing.

Step 2: Choose the Comparing Numbers Cards

Print the set of cards that matches the numbers your students are currently working with. The free comparing numbers printable includes options for comparing numbers to 20, comparing 2-digit numbers, and comparing 3-digit numbers.

Students don’t need every set at once. Just add the cards that fit your current instruction, or use different sets to differentiate for individual students or small groups.

Teacher Tip: If you’re using these in a math center, laminate the cards so you can pull the activity out again next fall.

Step 3: Compare the Numbers

Now students are ready to get to work! They choose a leaf card, look at the two numbers, and figure out which comparison symbol belongs between them. Is the first number greater than or less than the second?

The leaf characters give students a visual reminder of the comparison symbols. That’s especially helpful for students who are still learning which way each symbol faces.

Step 4: Sort the Cards

Once students have compared the numbers, they sort the card into the correct section of the tray.

This is where the hands-on piece comes in. Students aren’t just writing a symbol on a page. They’re making a decision and physically sorting each card based on their answer.

Teacher Tip: Before sending students to complete the activity independently, model a few cards together. Have students say the comparison aloud, choose the correct symbol, and explain why the card belongs in that section.

Step 5: Record the Comparisons

After sorting each card, students transfer the comparison to the included recording sheet. They write both numbers and add the correct greater than or less than symbol between them.

You get a record of their work, and students get extra practice writing the comparison symbols correctly.

The comparing numbers recording sheet also doubles as a quick check for understanding. If students consistently reverse a symbol or mix up place value, you’ll know exactly what to revisit during your next small group.

Easy Ways to Use This Fall Math Center

Set it out as an independent math center, pair students up for partner practice, bring it to your teacher table for small groups, or pull the differentiated card sets to give each group practice with the numbers they’re ready for.

You can even skip the tray completely. Put the cards and sorting labels in a basket or bag, and students sort them right at their desks or tables.
