There are so many things that Katie and I love about Rooted in Reading February for 3rd Grade.  The books are so diverse, full of depth, and just really good reads.  Here are our four books that we will focus on:

When Marian Sang is a beautiful biography about Marian Anderson.  It is written as a Narrative Nonfiction.  The story is just very well told and very captivating.  Students will learn about a woman who paved the way for African Americans, women, and artists.

For Grammar, students will focus on using commas in addresses and dates correctly.

Martina the Beautiful Cockroach is a Cuban Folktale about a cockroach looking for a suitor.  She is 21 days old and it is time for her to get married!  This would be a wonderful story to use during Valentine’s Week!  Her Cuban grandmother has a little trick up her sleeve to find Martina the perfect husband!

P1000089

For grammar, students will learn all about prepositions and prepositional phrases!

P1000172

Last Stop on Market Street is one of our favorite books!  CJ and his grandmother ride the city bus to volunteer at a soup kitchen.  He learns how to look for beauty in his surroundings on the way.  It’s a great story that can teach students to look at life from a different perspective.

For Grammar, students will focus on compound words!

P1000170

It isn’t very often that you find an Autobiography for children.  Trombone Shorty gives a peek into the life of Troy Andrews and how he got started playing the trombone.  It also shows the culture in New Orleans and Mardi Gras.

Possessive Pronouns are the focus for this book!
