Valentine’s Day is a unique holiday that requires very little to achieve huge brownie points with your students. So, if you’re a teacher who loves celebrating Valentine’s Day in the classroom or even just a teacher who wants to show a little love, this guide is for you. Whether you’re gifting, reading, or solving math problems, you’ll find Valentine’s Day ideas, cute crafts, meaningful picture books, and free activities! I’ve even tossed in some cozy outfit options if you like to go a little overboard like me.
Valentine’s Day Picture Books and Drawing
There is nothing quite as cute as a Valentine’s Day book display. I’ve been building my collection of “love” books for many years now, but you don’t need a full-on display—just a perfect book to set the overall vibe. You can’t go wrong with any of these, but my personal favorite will always be Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch. Check out the full book list, for more teacher favorites!
Valentine’s Day Freebie: Draw a Love Monster
Honorable mention: Groggle’s Monster. I love its colorful humor, and it’s a perfect pairing to this love monster drawing. This art + writing combo activity is perfect for encouraging creativity and it can be used with any Valentine’s Day read-aloud. It’s an easy go-to for reading responses, or if you find yourself with a few spare minutes or a station needing a fun filler.
2-in-1 Valentine’s Day Reading Sack
Once you have the perfect book, you can build in reading comprehension activities. Since I am all about efficiency, I found a way to pair the creation of Valentine’s Day sacks with a read-aloud. Students create their sacks to hold all of their valentines from classmates, but they retell story elements while doing so!
Students describe a character on the hearts and retell the story on the back of the sack. It’s a fun 2-for-1 activity that makes the best use of learning time.
Valentine’s Day Math Activities
Ready to add a little “love” to your math lessons? Keep the theme going with these Valentine’s Day math activities—both fun and educational!
Place Value Love Robot
Students can reinforce their understanding of ones, tens, and hundreds using place value blocks to build a robot or “love-bot”. It’s a hands-on way to enhance number knowledge with a low-pressure “craftivity”.
Fraction Valentine Activity
Get creative with a Fraction Box of Chocolates to teach fractions with a Valentine’s Day twist! Students create and identify various fractions on paper chocolate hearts to fill their Valentine’s boxes.
Love Bug Math Craft
Add a versatile Valentine’s Day craft to practice several different math concepts! Students answer equations, tell the time on clocks, and identify and describe shapes – all on their little love bugs.
