This post is going to be short and sweet, AND I’m going to start with the end product 🙂
We have been working on double digit subtraction without regrouping this week. Last year, I posted some freebie activities that you can find {HERE}. Today, I took the Frankenstein craft from my “Halloween Fun” unit and made it into a math activity! Here’s how they turned out…
And, here’s how we started the activity. I gave each pair of students 2 dice. I *think* these dice came with our math adoption. The red dice has the numbers 0-5 and the blue dice has the numbers 6-10. First, they rolled the blue dice with the larger digits twice to get their top number (I told them to roll again if they happened to land on ten because we aren’t quite ready to deal with that yet!). Then, they rolled the red dice with the smaller digits twice to make the bottom number of their subtraction problem. After they had both numbers, they subtracted! Once all of their problems were finished, they were able to make their Frankensteins! And, let me just tell you… they worked hard to get to finished in time to make their green guys! It’s called motivation {or bribery…whichever you prefer ;)}!!! And, at this point, I do whatever it takes, ha!
Super simple and fun… that’s what I’m ALL about!!!
