I have always loved teaching place value. There are just so many fun and engaging activities that you can do with numbers. Now that Israel is home for virtual learning, I am able to bring out some of my tried and true activities for place value practice. The best part? They are NO PREP!
Roll, Write, and Solve
First up is Roll, Write, and Solve. I love simple activities like this that just add one little element (such as dice) that makes students excited to complete their work. Here’s how this place value game works:
- Students roll dice to create a number (Israel created a 3 digit number).
- Students add and subtract 10 and 100.
- Students write the number word.

What Number Am I?
Next up is What Number Am I? These are basically like math station cards, but they are digital! There aren’t any movable parts, but these place value cards are great for review. Here’s how they work:
- Students look at the slide.
- These slides show expanded form, number words, or hundreds, tens, and ones.
- Students write the number shown.
Spin and Solve
Spin and Solve is another student favorite. Here’s how this place value activity works:
- Students spin a number.
- Students write the number spun.
- Students complete plus and minus 10 and 100
Name the Number
Last up is Name the Number. This is a pretty basic place value activity, but it allowed me to quickly see if Israel was understanding three digit numbers.
- Students look at the digital place value card.
- Students write the number shown.
Overall, we had a pretty successful week with place value!
