It’s Turkey Time!

It’s almost Thanksgiving… which means it’s also almost Christmas!  That just seems so crazy to say!  Before I go all red and green on you, let’s talk turkeys!

Today I was privileged to visit a 2nd Grade class.  They are studying turkeys this week with Rooted in Reading, but they hadn’t read Turk and Runt yet!  I was SOOOOOO excited for this read aloud.  It’s my all-time favorite!  ZEES BIRDS ARE CRAZY!  It never gets old!  If you’ve never read the book you probably think I’m crazy right about now, ha!

After reading the story we worked on describing the two main characters.  These character trait cards can be used to get students thinking about adjectives that describe both Turk and Runt.

After reading the story and discussing the characters, students started working on their turkey booklets.  It was so precious hearing one little boy say “I’ve been waiting to make a turkey all year!” pahahaha!  Students chose whether to describe Turk or Runt on the five feathers.

I just loved how they turned out!

On the inside, we made a booklet to talk about the plot of the story.  Students wrote about the Beginning, Middle, and End.

The students LOVED making these.  You can find the Turkey Booklets by clicking HERE!

The great thing about the booklet is it comes in three different versions:  Turkey Facts, Thankful Writing, and Story Elements!

I was going to leave these sweet little turkey hats that I found at Hobby Lobby for the students to take home, but they insisted on making them right away.  They served no purpose other than bringing a smile to their sweet little faces!  Plus, they were 80% off, so it was a win-win!  This little boy is one of those kids that thinks everything you do is wonderful.  I could put him in my pocket and carry him around for words of affirmation on the daily, ha!

Speaking of Turk and Runt, Katie has whipped up something AMAZING for you!  She put together a Reader’s Theater to add to our Rooted in Reading November and Turk and Runt units!  Your students will love, love, love acting out the story!

If you own Turk and Runt, Rooted in Reading November, or the 2nd Grade Bundle make sure you redownload so that you can grab this WONDERFUL Reader’s Theater!

Before you go, I have a little Turk and Runt FREEBIE for you!  If you have already subscribed to my newsletter, it is in your mailbox!  This freebie includes the character traits sort I mentioned above.  Plus, it has a Venn Diagram flap-book to compare the characters!

  1. Hello Amy,
My name is Tracy Clouse. I teach a 1st & 2nd grade combination class in a rural school in Arizona. The majority of my class is native American. I purchased your 2nd grade rooted in reading series because it’s going to help my students vocabulary. It was also a way for me to only teach one reading series and differentiate to my firsties. I am having do trouble with the difficulty of some of the worksheets for them to do independently. So…. I was wondering if you would be willing to make some similar worksheets for my firsties to go with the 2nd grade series or if you have any suggestions that can help me, I would appreciate it.
