Oh Subtraction… don’t you just love it 😉 As much as I love teaching math, I always fret a little over our subtraction with regrouping unit. Every year I try to use lessons that have been successful in the past plus throw out ones that were not. So, I’m constantly looking for ways to get my kiddos engaged and involved in our unit. It seems like no matter what I do or plan we always need to back up a little and regroup {pun most definitely intended :)}! Here are a few activities that my students really enjoyed from the past week!
Each student made their own snowman out of construction paper scraps. Of course, they absolutely LOVED this. On the bottom circle they solved 4 math problems. We did these towards the end of the week after my students had played lots of games, done tons of problems, and worked really hard. This was there little reward for being little worker bees.
It’s always difficult once we start mixing addition and subtraction problems, so we did lots of sorting. They really enjoy making pocketbooks to sort their work.
And, I’m not sure we could make it without our subtraction poem. We say this all day everyday this time of year!!
We are finished with our subtraction with regrouping unit, but that doesn’t mean we will stop completely. It’s going to be SUPER important to constantly review these skills through math warm-ups and math stations! On to money we go 🙂

Regrouping always worries me too. We did our unit right before Christmas break and have had to review after. Best of luck with money! I always think that is so much harder for the kiddos to get than any other math unit.
I love this unit! I bight it last year and was evaluated using it. Thank you for using your valuable time creating such wonderful things!

yay! Your TPT regrouping lessons have saved me. It's my first year teaching 2nd and I am so happy to have found you. Thanks for sharing!
I'm a college student studying to be an elementary school teacher and I am always amazed when I come across blogs of teachers, like yours. I really admire how you not only have the time to teach, grade, and prepare lessons, but you also upload your ideas to this beautiful blog! Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the great work! 🙂
Cute activity and poem. We are not allowed to do vertical equations, we have to do horizontal
