Frog Fun!

I realize that a lot of  you probably teach about frogs in the spring during your Science block.  Well, I don’t teach Science, and it’s fall… so it makes sense that we are learning about frogs, right?!  Ha!  Our standard this week is locating facts/details and comparing fiction/nonfiction books.  I try and always pick a topic that I know my kids will enjoy and make things a little more exciting.  So, frogs it is!
We started off the week reading Frog and Toad are Friends.  We discussed character traits and comparing characters and all about the aspects of a fiction book.
My students made Frog and Toads (from Brooke Hilderbrand) to write about.
Then it was time to start reading nonfiction books so that we could talk about facts and details!  After reading a few books I had my students draw a picture of a frog.  Then, they wrote on sticky notes to describe frogs.
 I love this little guy!
We also made these frog fact flapbooks to write what we have learned about frogs.
 Today we made our frog hats!  My students love these every year!
 I put all of our charts and activities in the hallway!  Makes for a fun bulletin board 🙂
 We used these guys with sticky notes for a little Frogs can… and Frogs have… action!

  1. Very cool! This may be a little high for second grade, but my third grade class did the same thing with bats last week! I used Bat Loves the Night and Stellaluna.

Looking at the student samples you show on your blog, it seems that even your students make a lot of spelling mistakes. Do you address this in any way please?
