I know the “school year” is winding down, but I wanted to drop in really quick with a few tips for directed drawings. If you’re like me, then you LOVE directed drawings. They offer a great opportunity for students to take a break from serious academia and get creative, but they can also be a fun opportunity to touch on writing and character identification. And at the end of the year, it’s always good to do something more fun.
If you have my Let’s Draw! 10 Kid-Requested Directed Drawings bundle, then I wanted to give you a few read-aloud suggestions that would pair perfectly with my favorite four drawings. I have included links to each book and a bit about why I think they are the perfect companions.
The Gorilla
Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla by Katherine is such a beautiful story because it’s REAL. It tells the story of a gorilla who was captured and used to attract visitors to a shopping mall before finding peace at Zoo Atlanta. Something to hold kids over until they can finally visit the Zoo again!
The Sloth
I have no idea why, but sloths are just the cutest. It was only right to pair it with a story just as cute. Sparky by Jenny Offill and Chris Appelhans is a humorous story about a little girl who gets a sloth as a pet because of how “easy” they are, but quickly finds that there’s much more to him than she thought!
The Tiger
Kids love a good Tiger roar and I know they will love this “wild” story about a tiger that grows tired of being so proper and decides to get back to his roots, inspiring everyone around him. After reading Mr. Tiger Goes Wild by Peter Brown, kids can create their own inner tiger.
The Dragon
So many good dragon books, I couldn’t choose just one!
- Dear Dragon: A Pen Pal Tale by Josh Funk is the perfect book for teaching kids about embracing differences when a young boy unknowingly becomes pen pals with a dragon.
- Me and My Dragon by David Biedrzycki is a witty and compelling story about a young boy and his pet dragon. He breaks down exactly what to do to have a dragon pal of your own.
- Dragon was Terrible by Kelly Dipucchio is a story about a dragon that’s terrible, but in the most unlikely of ways until a little hero swoops in to tame him.
You can’t go wrong with any of these choices, but the options are endless! Reading is just good for the soul and directed drawings just help to tie it all together.
