Amelia Bedelia

This week we have been working on cause and effect while reading Amelia Bedelia books.  Thanks to Donors Choose, we have tons of her books to select from!  And let me just say, that my kiddos have LOVED reading Amelia Bedelia so far.  I was kinda shocked when the majority of my students said that they have never heard of her, but more than shocked I was super excited to introduce them to this crazy character!

Today, as we were reading “Amelia Bedelia and the Baby,” we charted the cause/effects that we found. In my 2nd class I had the students write on the poster, but forgot to take a picture.  That allowed me to keep reading as they were charting!

We also made a bubble map to brainstorm what we have learned about Amelia Bedelia so far.

Then, the students chose 3 of the cause/effects from the story to make this little activity.  I gave them each 3 index cards, folded them in half, and wrote the cause (outside) and effect inside).  They drew Amelia Bedelia on manila paper, cut her out, and glued her onto the blue paper.

We will continue reading Amelia Bedelia for the rest of the week.  I hope to make a little craftivity if I have time, but if not… oh well!  Here are some Cause/Effect papers we will use for “Teach Us, Amelia Bedelia” and “Play Ball, Amelia Bedelia.”

Can’t wait to read more Amelia Bedelia books! We are also going to discuss/identify idioms and literal/non-literal word meanings as we are reading throughout the week.  Do you have any favorite activities that you use while teaching Amelia Bedelia?  I’d love to hear some new ideas!

  1. I love Amelia Bedelia! I feel like her sometimes, bless her! These are great!
We have used her to teach idioms (obviously she lacks this knowledge!)

  2. OH MY WORD! I absolutely love Amelia Bedelia. I love these books. I find that any child, boy or girl, finds Amelia Bedelia hilarious. I remember reading Amelia Bedelia when I was a kid. I've never thought of using these books as a lesson for cause/effect, but it's perfect! The kids will totally get it!

I especially adore your bubble map with that awesome illustration! Too cute! I can't wait to use this with my kiddles.

Thanks so much for sharing, Mrs. Lemons! You are THE BEST!!!

Hadar- It is a VERY hard concept! I've spent a lot of time reading books and searching for cause/effect in advance so I will know what I'm talking about, ha!

Mary Beth- these are laminated, so I will wipe off and save for next year! I'll keep them on display while we are in this reading unit and them clean 'em up 🙂

  15. I Love this!!! Quick question, how long do you spend on author/character stories? How many days do you usually spend on one book I guess is a better question. 🙂 Thanks so much!

  16. One day I dressed up for Amelia Bedelia for costume day, and it turned into a wonderful review of idioms and figurative language. I pretended like I really WAS Amelia and that all the idioms the kids were using were very confusing to me. They had so much fun trying to help me understand what the turns of phrase really meant 🙂 I will definitely be bringing the costume out again to do this cause and effect activity!
