My love runs deep for the Rooted in Reading curriculum that Katie and I have developed over the years. I am constantly thinking of things to add to it, new ways to present the information, or creating some freebie to go along with the curriculum. If I’m being honest, falling asleep is a struggle most nights because my brain is always swirling with new ideas. It’s hard to turn it off because I want to create and share ALL THE THINGS. That’s what happened to me last night. I thought…
WHAT IF WE HAD BOOK OUTLINES TO GO WITH EACH ROOTED IN READING BOOK? What if said outlines showcased the book title, nonfiction reader title, vocabulary words, comprehension focuses, grammar skill, and phonics element? That way teachers can easily see what all is included in EACH book on ONE sheet per book!
And that’s exactly what I tackled this morning for our First Grade Rooted in Reading Curriculum. I promise to get to the other grades soon 🙂 Here’s a little peek at what is on each book outline:
Here you can see the Book Outline for The Radiant Child by Javaka Steptoe. This is one of our February books. For this specific week students will read about Jean-Michael Basquiat. They will learn about the elements of a biography, how to find key details, and how to identify the main idea. For grammar they will practice writing dates. We also have a nonfiction reader that is all about Creative Role Models. Students learn about many well-known artists, illustrators, musicians, authors, etc.
Here is another one of our February books for First Grade.
While reading The Big Bed students will learn all about Point of View and Character Feelings. They will also make a connection to the story using the nonfiction reader about animals that sleep a lot! But that’s not it. We’ve got articles in grammar and the -oo word family for phonics. And you can see all of that just on the book outline!
And don’t worry. I created these for all FORTY First Grade Rooted in Reading Books!

My school district is researching phonics programs for next school year. Someone mentioned your program, but I am only seeing a phonics component for k (soon) and 1st. I teach 2nd, but it looks like the phonics is dropped off at 2nd and vocabulary is picked up. Is there a phonics option for 2nd grade?
Hi There! We do not include phonics in our 2nd grade units. So sorry.
