FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: What Is Rooted in Reading?
A: Rooted in Reading is a reading program that can be used as a supplement or the main reading curriculum. It is always best to look at the requirements by your state/district/school when selecting lessons that are for your classroom. Rooted in Reading focuses on one read aloud each week so that students can deepen their understanding, focus on the structure of the story, and use the different reading strategies and skills that we match with the story.

Q: How many copies of the read aloud does the teacher need?
A: Rooted in Reading is based on a READ ALOUD where the teacher is reading to the students. The teacher models fluency, expression, thinking out loud, and understanding a text. This ensures that the students take all of those best practices and put them into place when they are reading independently.

Q: If the teacher is reading the story, how are the students held accountable for independent reading?
A: Did you know that the majority of reading standards are not meant to be tackled only during independent reading? In fact, we can’t accurately assess our students’ independent comprehension based on one story because they are all on different reading levels. Students should also be reading books on their own level so that they can implement what they have learned through Rooted in Reading. This can be done during guided reading using leveled readers. BUT, we also include reading passages and nonfiction readers that can be used for independent or partner reading.

Q: How do you get grades?
A: Grades can be taken on the comprehension quizzes, reading passages, vocabulary activities/assessment, grammar activities, and interactive notebook components.

Q: What do you tell parents that ask if they can get a copy of the main read aloud to practice with their child?
A: You are more than welcome to send the book list home with the parents, but it is not feasible to provide a copy of the book for every student. That would be very expensive. Most of the books can be found on YouTube by googling the title. One very important component to Rooted in Reading is diving deep WITH students DURING class. The book will be read more than once each week and students focus on the story each and every day. They will get enough exposure to that story during class with their teacher.

Q: There are so many activities included, how do you fit it all in?
A: Go through the lesson plans and activities each week. Pull out what matches your standards and classroom needs. Focus on those first. Use the other activities during ELA centers or when you have extra time. We try to include a lot so that teachers have everything they need, but there is definitely always more than enough!

Q: Do the books have to be read in order?
A: You can definitely switch books around to match the scope and sequence for where you are. Some of the books are seasonal/holiday related, but the ones that are not can be taught at any time!

Q: We can’t read Christmas books in my district, what should we do?
A: There are 40 weeks of lesson plans in Rooted in Reading. We suggest outlining when you want to teach each story. Most schools go between 36-38 weeks so you should have a couple that can be moved into December or wherever is needed!
