May Read-Alouds in the Classroom with a FREEBIE

Happy MAY! Can you believe that it is already MAY? In some ways it seems like the year has flown by, but in other ways it seems like it is just dragging right along. Either way, I am so excited to show you what we’ve cooked up for May’s Rooted in Reading. AND, I have a freebie that can be used in many grade levels that I’ll share in this email!

We love focusing on a specific animal in each of our May grade level units. 2nd graders learn about sharks3rd graders learn about whales, and 1st graders will learn about….

Alligators and Crocodiles! Gail Gibbons has some of the best nonfiction books. She includes wonderful facts, illustrations, and text features. Alligators and Crocodiles is everything I could ever want in a nonfiction book! During this week, students will be researching alligators and crocodiles with kid-friendly websites. We also focus on Fact/Opinion, True/False, and determining the meaning of unknown words.

Chicks and Salsa is a delightful book about a group of farm animals that are tired of eating the same food day after day. The Rooster comes up with some clever solutions for all of his farm friends. Students will also learn about the life cycle of a chicken, homophones, and more!

Have you ever read Naughty Mabel? Oh my goodness, if you haven’t… you MUST! It’s a great read for any grade level. Students will analyze the main character, learn about cats and dogs, and focus on shades of meaning.

Last, but certainly not least, Jabari Jumps is a wonderful story that is perfect for The Growth Mindset. Jabari wants to jump off of the diving board, but he has some hesitations at first. With the encouragement from his father, and a courageous attitude, he finally takes the plunge at the end of the story. For this week, students focus on synthesizing, possessive nouns, and pool safety. We also pulled in Growth Mindset vocabulary that really helps to break down what is happening in the story.

You can check out the entire unit for May: HERE.

Now, for your FREEBIE. I’ve made a Fact and Opinion PowerPoint that can be displayed on a computer, projector, or student device. Students read through the statements and determine if they are facts or opinions. This would pair nicely with any of our grade level units, but also fits well with our week on alligators and crocodiles.

  1. I subscribed, but didn’t receive a confirmation email? I checked all my folders, including Spam, and have not see it yet. Any suggestions?
    Please and thanks!

    1. Nevermind, it just came through. Took it 10 minutes, for those that have similar concern.
