Summer Activity for the Classroom

How is the weather where you are? Oddly enough, it’s rainy and chilly here in Texas which is pretty much unheard of in mid-May. We have normally started our hot weather whininess by now, ha! Either way, we know those sweltering summer days are right around the corner, so that inspired me to create a fun and SUN-sational activity for your students.

Solve and Build a Sun

For this activity, students will solve six word problems to create their sun. You may have seen activities similar to this on here before. Click HERE to see a Solve to Create in action.

The Word Problems

As I mentioned before, students will be solving 6 problems. And actually, this is not limited to math! You could do 6 ELA questions, science questions, etc. You can use the problems included in this resource. You can type or copy/paste whatever problems you want for your students to focus on. I chose 6 review questions that incorporated addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division since it is the end of the year. Then I printed those word problems out onto colored paper.

The Task Folders

After printing my word problems, I put each one into a task folder. This adds an element of fun and allows the problems to be solved in a station rotation. Students get into 6 groups and rotate among the task folder stations.

Inside of each folder they will find a word problem and the craft piece that correlates to that task. Students solve the word problem on their recording sheet and then collect that piece of the sun craft.

The Final Product

Once students have solved the six problems, they have all the pieces they need to create their sun. Students can also transfer their final work onto the rays of the sun. What a fun and cute way to review any skill before summer break! You can find this SUMMER activity by clicking HERE.
