Fairy Tales

Happy ALMOST Friday, y’all!  What’s the weather like in your neck of the woods?  I’ve seen so many people posting about snow days and crazy Arctic weather.  But, here in North Texas… nothin’!  It’s just cold enough to where we can’t go outside for recess, but not cold enough to make it worth staying inside!  My friends are so ready to run around freely outside… crossing my fingers that happens tomorrow ๐Ÿ™‚
We have managed to keep ourselves busy and entertained, thankfully.  This week we have been comparing and contrasting traditional and contemporary fairy tales.
The first two days we read Cinderella and The Rough-Face Girl.  After reading and discussing, my students used this Venn Diagram flapbook to compare the two characters.
Then, some of the students chose to make a Cinderella portrait…
While others made the Rough-Face Girl.
Some of them are quite the little artists!
On the third day we read Cindy Ellen.  Writing to the stepsisters is always a favorite activity of my students!
Then, today we switched over to the Little Red Riding Hood.
After reading the fairy tale, my students wrote about the beginning, middle, and end of the story on index cards and made a little wolf to top it all off.  Open House is in a couple of weeks, so we are trying to make everything look presentable ๐Ÿ™‚
Tomorrow we will read Lon Po Po to compare to LRRH!  I absolutely LOVE reading fairy tales and wish we had time for more!!!  What are some of your favorites?

  1. I love that flipbook with the venn diagram. Thanks for the idea. I've been one of the ones in Atlanta with the weather. I just wrote about it on the blog. Thanks for the fun idea though as my county is the only major metro county to head back tomorrow.

  2. Your students are amazingly talented! I feel like my kids rush through artwork. We are on our 3rd week straight of indoor recess–AHH!

Just curious how low the temp has to be to call it indoor in Texas? We stay in if it is 25 degrees or less.

    Happy almost weekend!

  3. My kids LOVE Bubba the Cowboy Prince when we read a book to compare to Cinderella. They think it's hilarious because of the Fairy Godcow! Bigfoot Cinderrrrrella is another great one!

  4. I love the Venn Diagrams! We have been reading fairy tales and comparing and contrasting them lately too. Have you ever read Smoky Mountain Rose? It's an Appalachian Cinderella story and is HILARIOUS! It's written in a fun dialect and my kids die laughing every time I read it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. We're getting ready to start our unit on Freedom and then we'll be working on comparing and contrasting fairy tales in the next unit. I love the fractured fairy tales books by Nancy Loewen (a set of four new books is on sale right now for $12 on the Scholastic Reading Club site!). They are great for comparing and contrasting different versions of fairy tales and the students love them too!

  6. I love Princess Furball and Dinorella–two very different versions of the Cinderella story. The Talking Eggs is also a Cajun version with two very mean and spiteful stepsisters! Thanks for sharing the flipbook compare/contrast idea! We start Fairy Tales at the end of February!

  7. Hi! I wondered how you embed an Instagram photo into your posts… Do you have to have the widget?
I keep seeing all these “how to” videos install a widget for a photo roll on your side bar but I want to put them in a post.
If you could refer me to a source I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!!

  8. I love the venn diagram that you used. Do you think you can reshare these templates. I think I could get a lot of use out of them. Thank you for sharing all of these wonderful ideas. My class starts fairy tales in a week!
