Who just LOVES teaching about shapes? I DO! I love everything about it… how hands-on it is, how it’s a nice break from trickier concepts, and how you can tie in so many fun activities! We’ve had so much fun creating our geometry and fraction unit for first grade, so I wanted to share my SIX favorite activities with you!
ACTIVITY #1:
The Very Hungry Panda is starving for some shapes! BUT, not just any shape will do! Students must listen to shape riddles to find out which shape to feed the panda. The riddles include descriptions about the shapes 🙂
ACTIVITY #2:
Students will enter the Shape Zone and learn how to construct 2D shapes out of playdough! Using their work-mat, students will discuss the attributes of each shape made.
ACTIVITY #3:
Students become shape chefs at The Scrumptious Shape Pizzeria! Students spin to collect their shape toppings, build their pizza, and record information about the shapes used!
ACTIVITY #4
Now it’s time for composing 2D Shapes! Students explore how to compose shapes with pattern blocks, their work-mats, and pattern block task cards. Students will learn how you can use shapes to compose different shapes!
ACTIVITY #5:
With the Composing Caterpillar, students will listen to their teacher call out information about what the shapes are composed of. They will locate that shape and show how it is composed! Then, students build their caterpillar!
Activity #6:
After students have composed shapes in different ways, they will visit 6 Fill Up the Shape stations. Students will use the shapes provided to compose the shape shown. Students will learn that there are different ways to compose the shapes!

Looking for an EASY and FUN shape idea? Give the students popsicle sticks to use as sides and foam circles to use as vertices. Students can build their own shapes and write descriptions about them!
